Edinburgh and Glasgow Labour leaders back Sarwar

The leaders of Labour groups in Scotland’s two largest cities have backed Anas Sarwar to be the next Scottish Labour leader.

Edinburgh Labour group leader Cammy Day said Mr Sarwar can ‘unite communities across all our towns and cities’. Glasgow Labour group leader Frank McAveety said Mr Sarwar has the experience to be Scotland’s next First Minister.

Mr Sarwar has already received the public support of around half of Labour parliamentarians, just two days after announcing his candidature.

Anas Sarwar said:

“I’m delighted to welcome Cammy and Frank to my campaign to put Labour values at the heart of Scotland’s future.

They fight passionately for our great cities and work tirelessly to defend their local communities in the face of SNP cuts.

Labour councillors across Scotland are now the last line of defence between the SNP and valued local services such as schools and care for the elderly.

As Scottish Labour leader, I will fight to reverse the Nationalist cuts and invest in our communities to tackle inequality and injustice.”

Cammy Day, leader of the Labour group at Edinburgh City Council, said:

“I’m proud to support Anas to become our next Labour leader in Scotland. Anas is a hugely popular, hardworking MSP and has spent a lot of time on our many campaigns in Edinburgh – as well as nationally standing up for the NHS and fighting for proper funding of local government.

We need leaders in Holyrood who will stand up for Edinburgh as our capital city, and join us in our fight against poverty and social justice – and I know Anas will support this.

I’ve known Anas for many years and I know he will be a strong leader for Labour in Scotland, and unite communities across all our towns and cities and I support him wholeheartedly.”

Frank McAveety, leader of the Labour group at Glasgow City Council, said:

“As a son of Glasgow, Anas has always stood up for the people in our city.

I have seen first-hand how hard he grafts for local communities in Glasgow. In this year’s local elections, Anas made sure the Labour case was being put forward and he worked tirelessly to fight back for our party.

He has the experience we need in someone who can be the next First Minister.”
