Infrastructure investment shows single energy market works in Scotland’s interests

Following the announcement of investment by Scottish Power in Scotland’s energy grid infrastructure, Labour’s Shadow Energy Minister, Rutherglen and Hamilton West MP Tom Greatrex, said:

“This investment and the creation of new jobs is good for Scotland. Improvements to the infrastructure network are needed not just to transport renewable energy from Scotland to England, but also to send vital base load electricity in the opposite direction.

“The new jobs will be largely from investment in infrastructure, which is paid for by consumers across the whole of Britain rather than the burden falling on Scottish consumers alone. This shows why the current single market works in Scotland’s interests as Scottish Power themselves say, with a sharing of energy resources, risks and rewards. There is no sense in changing that.”

  1. The single market for electricity in the UK is also very good for Scotland’s renewables industry. The costs of renewable are spread out among millions of consumers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
