The SNP should listen to Scotland ahead of the budget

A poll published in the Daily Record today shows support for setting the Scottish rate of income tax 1 penny higher than the rate set by George Osborne.

The Survation poll finds that 42 per cent of voters would back a 1p income tax increase to invest in public services, with 31 per cent opposed. The poll also finds that 19 per cent of current SNP supporters say they are more likely to vote for Labour because of their radical tax plan.

Scottish Labour Public Services spokesperson Jackie Baillie said:

“This is a significant moment ahead of the final reading of the budget next week, and it gives the SNP a clear choice – endorse the tax plans of George Osborne or use the powers of the Scottish Parliament to stop cuts to our schools and services.

This poll shows strong support, including amongst SNP voters, for Kezia Dugdale’s bold plan to use the powers of the Scottish Parliament to stop cuts.

For nearly a decade the SNP have stopped short of delivering radical change in government because they always have one eye on the polls. These findings confirm there is nothing stopping the SNP government from doing the right thing.

Faced with the choice between using Scotland’s powers to invest in the future or the SNP’s cuts to schools, Scottish Labour choose to use our powers. It is now time for the SNP to think again on cuts. There is a better way.”

  1. If Jackie Baillie was right (aye, that’ll be right, and a first!), she would be looking forward to a Labour government, not pleading her case with the SNP.
A case she is still unable to explain the details off.
When I was at school, I was told—“show your workings”. Time the media did the same with Baillie.

  2. So just to be clear. In an election year. Scottish Labour are advocating a base rate tax rise?

    A winning strategy for sure.

You don’t honestly think we believe you would be doing this if you had ANY chance of taking power this electoral cycle do you? Come on Labour you have GOT to learn to stop treating the Scottish people like idiots if you want to begin the recovery. This is a prime example of SNPBADism. Nothing more. And it’s things like this that made us lose faith in you. Get it together.

  3. Yet again Jackie Baillie demonstrates with her empty rhetoric how much of a dead albatross she is around the brass neck of the Labour Party in Scotland.
Until the Labour Party in Scotland gets rid of the same old failures of her ilk it cannot move ahead with any credibility.

  4. Except the 1p rise would generate less than £400million and funilly enough is around the amount we would need to pay for trident renewal….

Penny for trident doesn’t have the same ring to it ….does it jackie?

    1. Trident renewal wouldn’t come out of SRIT receipts. Indeed it couldn’t. It’s impossible. You are spinning a line to avoid facing up to the fact that the SNP chose not to stand up against austerity.

    2. “Trident renewal wouldn’t come out of SRIT receipts. Indeed it couldn’t. It’s impossible. You are spinning a line to avoid facing up to the fact that the SNP chose not to stand up against austerity.”

Trident renewal is topsliced and set against the Scottish Deficit….

“avoid facing up to the fact that the SNP chose not to stand up against austerity.”

What…the austerity that Labour voted for in January 2015, where Balls, Ummuna and Milliband confirmed they would make the £30bn of savings of which most would be cuts….where Labour abstained on various votes on welfare afterwards…..

that austerity….the austerity that Labour shouted loud and proud they’d take part in if they had been elected in 2015?

  5. Its hard to believe, a daily record poll that backs a labour policy how unusual, also a statement from Jackie Baillie labours lead statement maker.

whats next, clarification from the muppet show.

  6. A Daily Record poll is not a poll of Scotland. The daily record has less credibility and is more corrupt than Labour itself when it comes to politics.

I absolutely guarantee the poll was “weighted” to deliver the desired result.

  7. “The poll also finds that 19 per cent of current SNP supporters say they are more likely to vote for Labour because of their radical tax plan.”

See this is where any shred of credibility falls flat on its arse. Labour have never hidden the fact that they will increase taxation when in power. They’ve been telling us for years they aint happy with the council tax freeze.

Everybody and his dog knows Labour is the party to increase your taxation.

So why anybody would believe that 19% of SNP supporters would suddenly switch when they find out something they’ve always known is beyond a joke.

    Its corruption with braindead stupidity.

    1. I take it you don’t believe the rest of the poll’s findings either, Mike?

          1. Its a Daily Record commissioned poll Duncan so it will be “weighted” to achieve a desired result.

          2. So you don’t believe the rest of the poll’s findings either? It’s a pretty straightforward question. Do you or don’t you?

          3. Let me take a wild stab in the dark and start off with the poll being limited to Daily Record subscribers.

          4. “You think Survation ran a poll and only polled Daily Record subscribers?”

Why wouldn’t they run a Daily Record commissioned poll from Daily Record subscribers if the commission asked them to run a poll with their subscribers?

            No reply button again Duncan.

          5. It’s almost like the system works exactly like it always has, only allowing replies five levels deep. Just reply using the button above my tweet and your reply will appear below mine. It’s not complicated.

Your determination to see everything that doesn’t suit you as a lie is really quite worrying, Mike.

  8. “Your determination to see everything that doesn’t suit you as a lie is really quite worrying, Mike.”

Your determination to publish nothing but lies spin misinformation false conclusions and demented mince is far more disturbing Duncan.

  9. Duncan, their is no chance anyone would believe a Daily record commisioned poll, has not been weighed to favour labour.

    A jokes a joke, but fantasy !

  10. And then there is this:

“When income tax powers are devolved there will be NO tax rises under the next Welsh Labour Government”

    @AMCarwyn Welsh Labour.

Seems the Red Tories in Wales are sticking with their Blue Tory comrades on not raising taxation.

    1. You really are a piece of work, Mike.

Where Labour pledges no tax rises you call them Red Tories and say they are in alliance with the Blue Tories.

Where the SNP pledge no tax rises you call it standing up for Scotland.

And where Labour pledge a fair tax rise to reverse Tory cuts you claim (as you did here: http://labourhame.com/penny-for-your-thoughts/#comment-133818) that Labour is out Torying the Tories.

Seems to me the only consistent thing in your politics is hatred of Labour. There is no logic and no reason in your ranting.

      1. No Duncan the hypocrisy is clearly the other way around. Labour accuse the SNP of being Tartan Tories because they wont increase taxation in Scotland then announce they wont increase taxation in Wales.
So what does that make Labour in Wales ACCORDING TO LABOUR IN SCOTLAND if not Red Tories Duncan?

Duplicity double standards hypocrisy take your pick. I’m going with all 3.

          1. The moment when they pledged to match Osborne’s cuts rather than take an anti-austerity approach isn’t such a time?

  11. “The moment when they pledged to match Osborne’s cuts rather than take an anti-austerity approach isn’t such a time?”

Pledged? Try forced. Because there are too many Tories in a Parliament Labour supported and campaigned to ensure remained an authority over us.

Cuts Labour not only abstained on but would have implemented had they won the election. 30 billion. 12 billion from welfare alone.

Your bare faced denial is almost as bad as your based faced lying.

    1. So now you’re just pretending the Scottish Parliament doesn’t exist, doesn’t have the power to take a different approach, and isn’t stuffed full of SNP MSPs who voted ALONGSIDE THE TORIES to impose massive cuts on local councils this month?

  12. The Scottish Parliament doesn’t exist in Wales Duncan a local Labour authority is in charge and they are not increasing taxes. They too take their direction from London central Office just like the Scotland branch.

So when we are told by Labour in Scotland that imposing taxes is anti austerity why are the exact same Labour party imposing austerity in Wales from their own perspective?

You people are too stupid for opposition never mind Government.

    1. There you go again. When the SNP endorse Osborne’s cuts you don’t accuse them of imposing austerity. Why is that?

    2. Austerity is not linked to taxation Duncan. Austerity is linked to ideology. You have to impose more than one condition in order to achieve it. For example if you increase taxation while decreasing or freezing income you impose austerity. Thats regressive from the perspective of those who have to bare the burden. But you can increase taxation without imposing austerity simply by taking more taxation from increased income. That’s progressive not regressive from the perspective of those who gain from the increase in income.

Not rocket science not even clever politics its simple reality and proves Labour is all about ideology and not peoples reality.

  13. In order for a 1p in the pound imposed income tax burden to be progressive it has to come with a 5p in the pound income increase for standard tax payers.

If it doesn’t then its regressive and imposes austerity.

Labour the Red Tory party of austerity imposition.

    1. I have to wonder whether even you believe the bollocks you spout on here sometimes.

      1. Both you and I and everybody else who reads your spew knows even you don’t believe a word of it.
